Career
After studying medicine at Zagazig University in Sharkia, Egypt, from September 2006 to November 2012, Ahmed Elshafei obtained his German medical licence in Leipzig in 2016. He completed his specialist training in ophthalmology at various ophthalmological institutions in Germany, qualifying as a specialist in 2021.
From January 2023 to December 2025, he worked as a senior registrar at Kassel University Hospital. In this role, his focus was on performing complex vitreoretinal procedures, particularly for retinal detachments, advanced diabetic retinopathy and glioma surgery. In addition, he had extensive experience in the surgical management of complex ocular trauma as well as challenging cataract and lens surgeries, including scleral-fixed intraocular lenses.
Elshafei has extensive surgical experience, having performed a total of more than 4,000 complex lens surgeries and over 1,000 complex vitreoretinal procedures. In addition to his surgical work, he is deeply committed to the training and qualification of eye surgeons and has trained numerous colleagues in lens and retinal surgery. He is also a regular speaker at numerous national and international ophthalmological congresses.
He has been working at CARE Vision since July 2025. In this role, he has taken on nationwide surgical responsibility for complex and particularly challenging lens cases within the CARE Vision network across Germany. His focus lies on the surgical management of difficult cases, as well as on the structured further education and training of eye surgeons in the field of modern lens surgery. In addition, he supports colleagues across all sites as a surgical consultant for complex surgical issues.
