What does LASIK mean?

LASIK is the most commonly used eye laser method worldwide. The abbreviation stands for laser in situ keratomileusis. With extensive long-term experience and excellent treatment results, LASIK is the most popular correction procedure for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

A LASIK treatment only takes about 10 minutes per eye (the use of the laser only takes a few seconds) and is carried out on an outpatient basis at one of the CARE Vision locations. Shortly after the LASIK treatment, most of our patients can see well and can go about their usual everyday life again after a day or two – of course without glasses and contact lenses.

The treatment – This is how the LASIK surgery works

Anesthesia

First, the eyes are prepared for the LASIK operation with numbing drops. Most patients only feel a slight pressure during the treatment.

Preparation

The ophthalmologist prepares a small lamella in the top layer of the cornea. This so-called flap is folded to the side and the actual laser treatment can begin.

Laser treatment

Now the Excimer laser starts the customized correction of the ametropia by modeling the cornea. This happens in a few seconds.

Healing

After the treatment, the flap is folded back into its original position as the body’s own plaster. It will grow back in no time.

The first milestone on your way to life without glasses is the detailed preliminary medical examination. During this we take a close look at your eyes and your individual ametropia and determine the most suitable treatment method for you.

Step 1. Initial information and aptitude test for LASIK

During a non-binding information session, you will learn how LASIK and other treatment methods make it possible to say goodbye to glasses and contact lenses. You have the choice between a free video consultation from the comfort of your own home or a personal appointment at one of our locations with one of our optometrists. On request, we can carry out an initial suitability test of your eyes for laser correction on site.

Step 2. Preliminary medical examination

The comprehensive preliminary medical examination is crucial for choosing the most suitable treatment method for you. We measure every millimeter of your eyes precisely and thus lay the foundation for optimal treatment results. 

At this appointment, you have the opportunity to ask your treating doctor questions.

Tip: You can save time by combining both steps

If you wish, you can combine both dates. After an initial aptitude test and a detailed consultation, we immediately carry out the preliminary medical examination. Many patients choose this option in order to save time for travel and appointments. Please plan about 2.5 hours for the entire examination.

Nachdem nun auch bei mir die Altersfehlsichtigkeit zugeschlagen hat, habe ich mich kurzerhand dazu entschlossen, wieder bei Care Vision anzufragen. Da ich mich bereits vor 10 Jahren bei Care Vision Stuttgart an beiden Augen habe Lasern lassen, um die damalige Weitsichtigkeit zu korrigieren, habe ich einen ausführlichen Untersuchungstermin für 50 EU in Mannheim gebucht. Das ich nach der langen Zeit noch immer fast 100% der erreichbaren Sehstärke besitze, war neben der Tauglichkeit für die geplante OP eine positive Nachricht der Untersuchung. Dr. Duran der Chirurg, welcher auch die Voruntersuchung geleitet hat, ist auf Fragen die offen waren auch an einem Samstags eingegangen, und hat mich innerhalb einer Stunde zurückgerufen. Unter anderem wollte ich wissen, warum beispielsweise die Augenklinik in Heidelberg, welche auch in meiner Auswahl stand (und übrigens alleine 400 EU für die Voruntersuchung nimmt), ausschließlich beide Augen operiert, und nicht wie in meinem Fall, nur eines. Die Antwort war plausibel und ich habe mich wieder für Care Vision entschieden. Nun war gestern die OP in Frankfurt und ich bin erneut sehr froh die Entscheidung getroffen zu haben. Beim Erstgespräch mussten wir leider über 4 Stunden warten, weil ein Arzt ausgefallen ist. Das hätten wir uns anders gewünscht. Eventuell hätte man im Vorfeld anrufen können und auf die Wartezeiten hinweisen können. Danach lief aber alles reibungslos. Das Personal war sehr nett und freundlich. Auch die Behandlung war schnell und unkompliziert. Insgesamt sind wir sehr zufrieden und würden wiederkommen.👍🏻

Ich kann die Klinik mit gutem Gewissen empfehlen. Ich habe mich von der ersten Beratung in Mannheim bis zur Nachuntersuchung sehr gut aufgehoben gefühlt. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolute Empfehlung – einfach großartig! Ich bin wirklich mehr als zufrieden mit Care Vision Freiburg! Von Anfang an habe ich mich dort unglaublich wohl und gut aufgehoben gefühlt. Von Voruntersuchung über OP bis zur Nachuntersuchung alles super gelaufen. Meine Voruntersuchung war in Aachen, kostet ca. 50€ und dauert ca. 2 Std. Unbedingt eine Begleitperson mitnehmen, weil man Pupillenerweiterte Tropfen bekommt. Die Trans-Prk Op war in Köln. Unbedingt vorher die Tropfen kaufen! Die Vorbereitung und Op haben ca. 1 Stunde gedauert. Dort auch eine Begleitperson mitnehmen, weil man danach sehr Lichtempfindlich ist. Die ersten 3 Tage sind sehr schmerzhaft und man kann sich nur in dunken Räumen aufhalten. Nach dem 4 Tag waren die schmerzen weg und nach jeden Tag wurde die Sehstärke besser. Die beiden Nachuntersuchungen in Köln dauern nur ca. 20-30 min. Nach 10 Tagen konnte ich wieder Autofahren und Arbeiten gehen. Nach 14 Tagen bin ich schon bei ca. 80% Sehstärke und ich bin mit dem Ergebniss sehr zufrieden. Solange man sich an den Tropfenplan hält, merkt man das die Augen jeden Tag besser werden. Die Betreuung bei Care Vision war sehr gut und ich kann es nur empfehlen.

Nach langem Zögern, aus Angst es könnte etwas schief gehen, habe ich mir letzten Freitag bei Care Vision in Trier die Augen mit der Femto Lasik Lasern lassen, da ich mit Hornhautverkrümmung und sehr hoher Dioptrienzahl im Minusbereich im Alltag ohne Brille garnicht mehr zurecht kam. Vom ersten Moment der Voruntersuchung bis zur Nachuntersuchung habe ich mich hier komplett wohl gefühlt und sehr gut aufgehoben, der behandelnde Arzt sowie das gesamte Team sind super einfühlsam und professionell. Es wurden viele Tests gemacht und man hatte gleich das Gefühl, das dort nicht einfach „gemacht“ wird, sondern dass wirklich individuell und präzise geschaut wird, welches Verfahren für einen das richtige ist. Total überraschend kam 2 Wochen nach meiner Erstuntersuchung sogar ein Anruf, dass auch ein anderes Verfahren für mich geeignet wäre (zuerst sollte eine PRK gemacht werden), was mich total gefreut hat und was mir gezeigt hat, dass sich Dr. Salim auch im Nachgang noch weiterhin mit mir beschäftigt hat und nicht einfach nur seine normale Arbeit „durchgezogen“ hat. Allein das hat mir komplett die Angst vor der Behandlung genommen weil es mir einfach die Sicherheit gab, dass man hier nicht einfach abgefertigt wird, sondern wirklich exakt und penibel auf alles geschaut wird um das bestmögliche für den Patienten zu geben. Die eigentliche OP lief reibungslos und ohne Schmerzen. Am gleichen Abend konnte ich bereits wieder alles sehen und am nächsten Tag nach der Nachkontrolle und einem Sehtest durfte ich schon wieder Auto fahren, Schmerzen hatte ich da bereits garkeine mehr! Gestern bei der zweiten Nachkontrolle wurde dann sogar festgestellt, dass wir ein besseres Ergebnis erzielt haben als es geplant war! Ich bin überglücklich dass ich diese Entscheidung getroffen habe und ärgere mich, dass ich es nicht schon früher gemacht habe, alle Ängste waren völlig unbegründet! Es ist ein großes Stück Lebensqualität, dass ich damit zurück gewonnen habe und würde diesen Schritt jederzeit wieder wagen! Ich kann Care Vision von ganzem Herzen empfehlen ❤️

Frequently asked questions about LASIK (FAQ)

How long does vision change last after LASIK?

LASIK surgery is characterized by the particularly rapid restoration of vision after the treatment. Many patients are immediately impressed by their good vision without glasses immediately after the LASIK operation. Most patients are fully operational again the next day and can go about their normal everyday life without visual aids. Full vision recovery takes about two to three months. The exact duration varies from person to person and depends in particular on the severity of the visual defect being treated.

Which ametropia can LASIK surgery correct?

LASIK treatment can correct short-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism. In the case of myopia, treatment is usually possible up to -10 diopters; with farsightedness up to approx. 4 diopters. 

When should I have my eyes lasered?

You can have your eyes lasered if you wear glasses or contact lenses and find these visual aids annoying. You should also be at least 18 years old and have stable eyesight for more than 12 months. You must not suffer from any eye disease and should be in good health.

Can I laser both eyes at the same time?

Yes, both eyes are lasered during one treatment. Because after LASIK, our patients can usually see clearly again immediately or a few hours after the treatment. Your eyes may be slightly irritated and sensitive to light on the day of treatment; the day after LASIK you can usually go back to your usual activities and work. 

How long does LASIK surgery take?

The treatment only takes about 10 minutes per eye and the laser itself only takes a few seconds. Anesthetic eye drops are administered before the treatment. As soon as the anesthesia sets in, a small cover, the so-called flap, is prepared on the surface of the cornea and folded up. Then the actual laser treatment begins. The doctor uses the laser to model the surface of the cornea in such a way that the ametropia can be compensated for. The tiny corneal flap is returned to its original position and the treatment is complete. 

Is LASIK treatment painful? Do I get anesthesia?

The treatment is painless as you will be given numbing eye drops. A few patients only feel a slight pressure or foreign body sensation. Anesthesia is not necessary. Before the treatment, we offer you a sedative tablet. We recommend patients to take this, especially if they are nervous. 

How long will it take for my eyes to recover after LASIK?

After LASIK, our patients can usually see clearly again immediately or a few hours after the procedure. You should rest on the day of the treatment, as your eyes can be easily irritated and sensitive to light. You can usually go back to your usual activities and work the day after the treatment. You should avoid strenuous sport, swimming and eye make-up for a week so that your eyes can regenerate as best as possible.

How long do you have dry eyes after LASIK surgery?

Nach der Behandlung können vorübAfter the treatment, you may experience a temporary sensation of dryness or a foreign body sensation (similar to a grain of sand in the eye), as well as burning or itching. We will give you artificial tears and a drop schedule that you should follow to prevent the symptoms. The feeling of dryness should disappear after a few weeks at the latest.

How much does LASIK surgery cost?

The cost of LASIK is around €1.200 per eye (billing according to GOÄ after the treatment has been completed). You also have the option of financing the treatment with up to 12 monthly installments (0% financing).
