How much does a lens treatment cost?

At CARE Vision, the costs for a lens treatment range from approximately 2,800 to about 3,000 euros per eye. The costs depend on the treatment method and the artificial lens used. The degree of your corrective vision impairment does not affect the costs.

For the correction of presbyopia and cataracts, we generally recommend treatment with multifocal lenses. Unlike monofocal lenses, multifocal lenses can provide clear vision at all distances.

Trifocal lenses / Multifocal lenses: Brief explanation

Multifocal lenses (also trifocal lenses) are often used to correct presbyopia and cataracts. They enable sharp vision at all distances. The multifocal lens replaces the natural eye lens, which loses elasticity with age and can no longer adjust to different distances. After a multifocal lens treatment, the onset of cataracts associated with aging is no longer possible.

ICL lenses / Phakic lenses: Brief explanation

The ICL lens (Phakic Intraocular Lens) is an artificial lens gently inserted into the eye in addition to the natural lens. Implanting an ICL/Phakic Intraocular lens can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Particularly, patients with very strong diopters benefit from Phakic Intraocular Lens implantation.

Monofocal lenses: Brief explanation

A monofocal lens, also called a single-vision lens, provides good vision at one distance, usually in the distance. A visual aid is still necessary for short distances. The monofocal lens can be implanted in the eye to treat presbyopia or cataracts instead of the natural lens. For cataract treatment, the costs of monofocal lenses are usually covered by health insurance.

Lens Implantation costs: Reimbursement by health insurance

Some private health insurances may fully or partially cover the costs of lens implantation.

After the medical pre-examination, you will receive a cost estimate. With this, you can apply to your health insurance for reimbursement of the costs of your MIOL (Multifocal Lens) or ICL (Phakic Lens) treatment.

Public health insurances usually only cover the costs of cataract treatment with monofocal lenses. You can submit the invoice issued after the treatment to your health insurance for reimbursement.

CARE Vision cannot guarantee the reimbursement of your expenses by health insurance. If lens treatment is not medically necessary (meaning vision correction is possible with glasses and contact lenses), public health insurances usually do not cover treatment costs.

Lens treatment: Tax deductibility

Eye treatment through laser surgery or lens implantation is usually tax-deductible as an extraordinary burden.

The Koblenz Regional Finance Directorate decided in 2006: “For taxpayers undergoing eye laser surgery, there is always a visual impairment and thus an illness. The surgery is therefore a medical treatment. The surgical method is also scientifically recognized. Therefore, the representatives of the states decided to recognize the expenses as an extraordinary burden according to § 33 EstG without the submission of an official medical certificate.”

The treatments at CARE Vision are invoiced by the treating physician according to GOÄ. The amount of reasonable extraordinary burdens depends on your income and individual circumstances. CARE Vision cannot guarantee the actual tax deductibility.
