Jana Stahl in her own Words
I had around -4 diopters and relied on glasses or contact lenses every day. Especially while rowing, my glasses constantly bothered me. Everything is always moving, and my glasses kept slipping. During sports, you cannot simply push them back up and carry on comfortably. When preparing for the Atlantic crossing, I quickly realized that contact lenses would not be a good solution either. We did not have a proper bathroom on the boat, and hygiene conditions would have been difficult. On top of that, there would be saltwater everywhere, wind, lack of sleep, and storms. In situations like that, I did not want to focus on my poor eyesight — I wanted to make decisions with a clear mind and clear vision. During a safety training session before the journey, I truly realized how important good vision is on the water. If my glasses had been lost during a storm, I would barely have been able to see anything, and that can become a real safety issue. When an alarm goes off, my first instinct should be to look at the instruments — not search for my glasses.
I immediately felt comfortable during the first examination.
Before the treatment, I definitely had a lot of respect for the procedure. That is why I spoke to other people who had already undergone laser eye surgery. That helped calm many of my fears. Most importantly, I wanted to feel that I was in good hands. And that is exactly how I felt at CARE Vision from the very first examination. I underwent a very thorough examination, everything was explained clearly, and I truly felt supported throughout the process. That made the decision surprisingly easy for me in the end.
The treatment was much faster than I expected.
Of course, I was nervous on the day of the treatment. But the procedure itself was far more relaxed than I had imagined. It only took about 15 minutes, and I experienced no pain during or after the procedure. Immediately afterward, I only felt a slight foreign body sensation in my eyes, but the eye drops helped right away. Afterward, I rested a little and went for a walk that same evening. That was when I already noticed how incredibly sharp my vision had become. It was an amazing feeling.
During the Atlantic crossing, I experienced true freedom from glasses for the first time
Shortly after the treatment, my big adventure began: crossing the Atlantic Ocean. That was when I truly realized what freedom from glasses really means. I could climb out of the cabin in the morning and see clearly immediately, without searching for my glasses first. While rowing at night under the stars or in the moonlight, I could see dolphins swimming beside the boat — without blurry saltwater streaks on my glasses. I probably would have experienced those moments very differently before the treatment.
I am grateful for it every single day.
Even today, I notice every day how much my life has changed. During sports, running, or swimming, I no longer have to rely on contact lenses. My glasses no longer fog up in winter, and I still love waking up in the morning and being able to see clearly immediately. Traveling has also become much easier. No contact lenses, no cleaning solutions, less luggage. And honestly, I even save money now. Instead of constantly buying new glasses or contact lenses, I treated myself to a really cool pair of sunglasses instead.
I am incredibly grateful for this decision.
Laser eye surgery did not just give me clear vision it gave me freedom. I truly appreciate every single day being able to see clearly, whether on the water, during sports, or in everyday life.
For me, this decision was absolutely the right one.
