“I’ve been wearing glasses since 2012. What bothered me most were the recurring migraine attacks I’ve suffered since starting to wear corrective lenses. The same goes for contact lenses, which I’d been trying out as an alternative since last year. The cost of solution and monthly disposable lenses, which really adds up over time, was also a key factor in my decision. But what bothered me most, apart from the constant headaches, was that I’m very active and love snorkelling, for example. It did happen on occasion that I lost one of my contact lenses, which can happen very quickly if the diving mask isn’t fitted properly and water gets in. I therefore always had to think about spare contact lenses, which was really annoying in the long run. If I didn’t have any spare lenses, I naturally couldn’t see a thing whilst diving if I lost my contact lenses. Glasses and contact lenses also bothered me a lot when doing yoga or reading a book. I also had to switch to contact lenses a lot for work, and the dryness really got to me there. Before I started working at CARE Vision, I hadn’t really given laser eye surgery a second thought, so I’d only ever seen contact lenses or the traditional option – glasses – as a way to correct my vision problems. I decided to go for laser eye surgery so I could finally get rid of my contact lenses.

Just a few hours after the treatment, I could see perfectly

After the initial consultation with my treating doctor, Dr Giesbrecht, I knew that LASIK would be the procedure to correct my vision. On the day of the treatment, I was very nervous, as I had only ever been in an operating theatre once myself and had previously only looked after patients during preliminary consultations and preparation. Even though I was familiar with the entire process and the treatment procedure, I was still nervous. I wasn’t afraid, though, as I trust my doctor and my colleagues. The suction created when the flap is formed was slightly uncomfortable, but I didn’t experience any pain during the treatment. It all went very quickly, and the treatment was over in just a few minutes. I was able to see clearly just a few hours after the treatment.

I can go about my daily life without any restrictions

When I got up the next morning, it felt as though I was wearing invisible glasses. I could see just as well as I did before with my glasses. But what surprised me most of all was that my headaches had finally gone! My eyes no longer water when I chop onions, and annoying raindrops that obstruct my vision in bad weather or fogged-up glasses when cooking are also a thing of the past. My ‘wow’ moments were, above all, no longer feeling any dryness. Even during yoga, my glasses don’t fall off. You’re completely unrestricted in your everyday life. Thanks to my experience with laser eye surgery, I can also put our patients’ minds at ease and explain the whole process much better now. Laser eye treatment was a liberating decision for me and has significantly improved my everyday life. I’m really glad I went for it, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
