I’ve needed corrective lenses since I was 18, as I had a visual impairment of -5 dioptres. This was often a real nuisance, especially in everyday life: my glasses would fog up in the rain or constantly slip down when I was playing sport. They also got in the way when I was cycling or at the swimming pool with my children. I did use contact lenses from time to time as an alternative, but they often caused my eyes to feel dry and were not ideal either. On one occasion, a contact lens even fell out. It was so confusing to see clearly with one eye and not the other that I had to cover one eye with a patch just to be able to see.

The constant inconvenience of my glasses and the discomfort of contact lenses were becoming increasingly frustrating. I decided to undergo ICL treatment with my colleague Raquel Socias because I trust her completely. Laser eye surgery wasn’t an option for my eyes – but saying goodbye to my glasses certainly was!

Finally, no more glasses or contact lenses

Even though, as an ophthalmologist at CARE Vision, I help people every day on their journey to a life without visual aids, I was a little nervous on the day of my own treatment. But I knew I was in the very best of hands with my colleagues and enjoyed the unique, all-round care that our team provides every day with great care and precision. The treatment was quick and completely painless. It was fascinating to experience the whole process, from the thorough preliminary examination to becoming ‘glasses-free’, from a patient’s perspective for once.

It’s brilliant to be able to see clearly first thing in the morning

I could see clearly just a short time after the operation. It was simply incredible! It felt as though I was discovering a whole new world. Waking up in the morning and seeing clearly straight away without glasses or contact lenses. My best glasses-free experience so far was our beach holiday. I could watch my children playing in the water and swim carefree at the same time, without constantly worrying that my glasses would slip or fall into the water. I enjoy this freedom in everyday life too. Simply leaving the house without thinking about whether I’ve actually packed my contact lens solution, or just buying a pair of normal sunglasses without prescription lenses, is really great. I can simply do the things that matter to me without having to rely on visual aids.

Greater freedom, a better quality of life

Having undergone the treatment myself, I can relate to my patients with even greater empathy. So many of my patients tell me during their follow-up appointments: “Why didn’t I do this much sooner?” And now I can understand them all too well. The treatment has significantly improved my quality of life, and I would recommend to anyone considering it that they book a preliminary consultation. If everything is suitable, laser eye surgery or, as in my case, lens treatment is an excellent way to enhance your quality of life and regain a great deal of freedom. In summary, I can say that the treatment was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It feels simply wonderful to finally see the world clearly and distinctly without glasses or contact lenses. More freedom, a better quality of life – that’s exactly what this treatment has given me. The treatment was life-changing for me.
