Eye laser surgery not possible – what now?

Eye laser surgery: When is one not suitable?

Not all people who suffer from ametropia are suitable for laser eye surgery. High ametropia or a very thin cornea can be the reason why LASIK, Femto-LASIK, PRK/LASEK or Trans-PRK treatment is not possible.

Lens treatment with intraocular lenses

For laser eye treatment, nearsightedness must not exceed -10 diopters, farsightedness must not exceed +4 diopters, and astigmatism must not exceed 6 diopters. If you suffer from higher refractive error, treatment with implantable contact lenses (also implantable Collamer® lens – ICL) is often a very good alternative to laser vision correction.

This method involves the insertion of a highly developed artificial lens that can remain in the eye permanently. The so-called phakic lens is invisible, imperceptible and well tolerated. The intraocular lens makes it possible to regain optimal vision in all areas.

The ICL usually shows very good results, especially in patients with very high diopters. This lens treatment is also a popular solution for patients whose cornea is too thin or weak and cannot be treated with PRK/LASEK.

Lens treatment with multifocal lenses

If eye laser treatment is not possible, lens treatment with multifocal lenses can also be a very good alternative. This treatment method can be particularly well suited for patients over the age of 45 in particular to compensate for the beginning or already advanced presbyopia.

With this treatment method, the multifocal lens replaces the natural lens and, thanks to several focal points, enables optimal vision at all distances. The exchange of lenses also protects against cataracts, which are mostly age-related.
